Frequently asked questions
Is Chess Compass free?
Yes. The analysis board, the Stockfish engine, the opening explorer, the puzzles and the bots are all free to use, with no account and nothing to install. There is a paid tier for heavier use, but nothing described on this page requires it.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Open the board and start analysing. An account is only useful if you want your games saved across devices.
Which chess engine does the analysis use?
Stockfish - the strongest open-source chess engine - compiled to WebAssembly so it runs inside your browser rather than on a shared server. Nothing is queued behind other users, and your positions stay on your device.
Can I import my games from Chess.com or Lichess?
Yes. Enter your username and pick a game from your recent history, or paste a PGN directly. No password or account linking is needed.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Everything runs in the browser, so it works on phones and tablets as well as desktops - including on machines where you cannot install software.
Ready to find your best move?
No account needed, nothing to download. Open the board and start analyzing in seconds - completely free.
